Brides, This Wedding Destination is All About YOU!

I first heard about Isla Mujeres many years ago when some friends of mine honeymooned there. They fell in love with its quaint charm and the white-sand beaches so typical of Caribbean islands. Isla Mujeres is both the name of the small island (about five miles long and about a one kilometer wide,) as well as the town on that island. It’s about 13 km northeast of Cancun—an out-of-the-way paradise for a bride and groom. You can marry here and honeymoon here, and you may never want to leave.

The Island of Women

Yes, that’s what Isla Mujeres means. In Pre-Colombian times, the island was sacred to the Mayan moon goddess, Ixchel. When the Spanish arrived here in the 16th century, they named it “Isla Mujeres” because of the many cult images of the moon goddess on the island. While other islands and towns in the area are bustling with people and activity, Isla Mujeres (which can only be reached by ferry) is still laid back, mellow and much less commercialized, so your wedding here will be surrounded by natural beauty and a relaxing ambience.

A Seaside Ceremony and Reception

There are several hotels on the island, and you can also rent your own villa. This wedding web site guides you through everything you need to know to plan your wedding here, though there are other wedding planning sites for Isla Mujeres, including the hotels. As one island-wedding web site puts it:

Imagine standing beside the love of your life, hand-in-hand, on a beautiful, white sandy beach with crystal-blue waters lapping up on your toes.  As the most brilliant sunset you have ever seen sets, an enveloping warm breeze passes through you.  You look into your lover’s adoring eyes and say,  “I do!”

As the sunset lingers, you and your guests will celebrate on the shore with a fabulous island dinner of seafood, traditional Mexican fare, grilled steaks—whatever your hearts desire. Party far into the night to the sounds of a mariachi band or contemporary music. You can even go bar-hopping and hear all kinds of music—but nothing like the beautiful music the two of you make together!
