SATC’s Carrie Bradshaw Lives in Wedding Venue Heaven

My adorable husband entered a local contest and won two tickets to see the just-released Sex and the City movie. He knows I’m a big fan, and when he surprised me with the tickets, he graciously waived his ticket so I could take a friend. (OK. So he wanted to see SATC about as much as I want to see Texas Chainsaw Massacre 4.) Totally enjoyed the movie, and as your MWH Destination Diva, I simply can’t resist telling you about the location Carrie Bradshaw picked for her long-awaited, permanent hook-up with Big.

When Carrie ran into Manhattan’s New York Public Library and up the stairs, she was instantly awed by the McGraw Rotunda, as if she’d never seen it before. But then again, she wasn’t thinking “wedding venue” before. This revered, 106-year-old, marble library on 5th Avenue is a monument to classic, highly ornamented Beaux Arts architecture. The McGraw Rotunda’s walls and ceiling depict the evolution of the printed word, and Carrie—an accomplished author—knew at once she wanted to be married surrounded by the great literature of the world. And yes, the library has several spaces you can rent for your wedding reception, although their Web site does say ceremonies aren’t allowed.

The truth is, Carrie had her pick of dozens of fabulous locations for a wedding (or any other major life celebration, for that matter.) As long as we’re in the Big Apple, here are a couple more wedding venues you can consider if you truly want to blow your guest’s minds.

There’s a roof garden at The Top of The Rock (as in Rockefeller Center) that’s available for special events. My describing it would pale in comparison to a photo, so check out the shot on the left. Before I go any further, I should mention (though I’m sure you’ve already made the assumption) that these spots don’t come cheap. But if you have the means and the motivation, this is an exquisite spot for a wedding. The outdoor garden has a reflection pool and dazzling views of the city that never sleeps.

Though the garden across the river at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden isn’t on a rooftop, the size, scope and magnificence of the setting more than make up for it. I quote: “There are many delightful settings to choose from, including the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, with its magical mirrorlike waterscapes, cloud-pruned maples, and waterfalls; the Cranford Rose Garden, where tens of thousands of fragrant roses bloom in summertime; and the Osborne Garden, with its classical architecture, cascading fountain, and stately procession of crabapple trees and azaleas.”

These are only three of the many spectacular wedding sites New York has to offer. Here’s one top-ten list of New York wedding venues. After that, it’s up to you–New York, New York!

What a GREAT article! I really enjoyed this. Only WISH I had that kind of money hanging around, that after I took care of world hunger, I could rent the top of Rockefeller for my closest friends and get married all over again.
