I see the weekend coming and I’m so glad! It’s been a week of “full moon crazy” days for me. I’m ready for a little decadent self-indulgence, kind of like those Dove Chocolate commercials. So while I was in a sweet searching mood, it seemed like the perfect time to go look for the wedding equivalent of sugary indulgence - wedding cake.
One of my favorite places to stop and admire the creativity in cakes is Baltimore’s own Charm City Cakes (which some of you may know from the TV show Ace of Cakes). While they certainly can do elegance and grace in their cakes (see their “Nantucket” or “Kristin” cakes), it’s the amazing unusual cakes that always capture me. Did you see the Buddha? It’s so real you’ll be tempted to rub the belly for good luck!
A new stop for me this time around was Fancy Cakes by Leslie, Inc. in Gaithersberg, MD. At their cakes page, you can find a lovely floral (5th down on the right) that I particularly liked along with a very funny “purse” cake complete with cell phone. They also do edible placecards (how cool is that idea?) and “mini-cakes” which are simply adorable.
Another new site to me was Cakes Unique in the Metro-DC area. Here I was captured by a dazzling white cake with autumn leaf colored accents and a romantic rose petal strewn one. Checking out the flavors list, I found a “passion fruit cake with chocolate mousse and raspberries” option. Wonder what that tastes like? It sounds yummy.
Well, there’s my sugar rush for now. Hopefully the weekend will be calmer than my week.

My favorite topic! I love Ace of Cakes, too.
