Where The Wild Things Are

Adventure Honeymoon

Is your fantasy honeymoon a trek through an exotic rainforest, an African safari, or a far eastern escape? Here are five places to find out where the wild things are:

  • Galapagos Islands, Ecuador - From the official website: “The Galapagos Islands lie almost a thousand kilometers off the coast of Ecuador’s mainland. Biologically diverse, they are one of the planet’s natural paradises and one of the most visited national parks in the world. The flora and fauna you’ll find here are truly unique. Here, you’ll see unending beaches of marble white sand such as those of Tortuga Bay, tunnels of lava, spectacular diving areas, and a marine reserve, not to mention the prehistoric animals and colorful birds you’ll get a chance to observe.” — Personally, this is on my dream spots to see list. The Galapagos Marine Reserve has spots where they allow diving up close with coral reefs, manta rays, and turtles. For you truly adventuresome types, sometimes that includes sharks.
  • Thailand - A truly diverse land that offers ancient temples and wildlife preserves both. You’ll find jungles, beaches and forests are all parts of this kingdom. Fancy a rafting expedition? Long distance hikes? Bird watching? Want to stand in awe of the elephants? Even if you choose Thailand for the richness of the wilds, you can’t leave out some time in Bangkok. From the 400 Buddhist temples to the modern shopping centers (with a side stop at the Pudthaisawan Sword Fighting Institute), Thailand is a unique honeymoon choice that will stay with you the rest of your life.
  • South Africa -The South African National Parks has 21 conservation areas including the breathtaking Moutain Zebra National Park. Named for the animals it helps conserve, the park has grasslands, thicket and savanna. Check out the website for some colorful background characters and more information on self-drive safaris, canoeing, hiking and 4×4 trails.
  • India -Offering adventure sports to eco-tourism, there’s a little something for everything. India has been touched by many spiritual influences as well - Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Christianity, Islam and Sikhism. Take an Elephant Safari at the Jim Corbett National Park or start a camel safari at Jaisalmer. Whatever you do, do not skip the most incredible monument to love - The Taj Mahal.
  • Costa Rica - This makes my list of incredible places, not only because I’ve been there, but because I’d love to someday go back! From the Carribean coast to Monteverde’s natural conservation areas, this is a Latin American gem. For a glimpse of this tropical emerald beauty, check out the Travel Channel’s Passport to Latin America with Samantha Brown and her stop in a Costa Rican rainforest.

No matter what calls to your wildside, there is probably a tourguide willing to get you there. Don’t forget to check the latest information on travel abroad from the US State Department. You can find the most current travel warnings as well as get a checklist for everything from shots to passports.

It’s interesting to see that when it comes to honeymoons, people choose to go faraway places. People who live in America want to travel to Europe, Caribbean, Asia etc. People in Asia want to see America, Europe, etc. The farther away it is from where you stay, the more exotic it seems to be for the couple.
