Wedding Superstitions

Lucky Bride

Do you toss a pinch of salt over your left shoulder? Find yourself avoiding cracks in the sidewalk? Never open an umbrella indoors? Oh, you superstitious thing, you! Well, you aren’t alone. According to this article, a survey done for American Demographics found that 44% of Americans were willing to say they were superstitious.

Among those surely must be some who are superstitious about weddings! Why else would we do things like the following?

  • Not let the groom see the bride before the ceremony on the wedding day – its bad luck, eh?
  • Toss the garter or bouquet – a semi-tradition but based on the superstition that whoever catches it will be next to marry.
  • Don’t put on the full bridal array until the wedding day – whoops, MHW has previously advised brides to do just that – especially for photography portraits and to make sure it’s all what you want it to be! Whew! Good thing WE aren’t that superstitious! (Those of you who are – well, leave 1 shoe off or something hehe!)

Blissweddings.com’s library includes a fun grouping of wedding superstitions. Wow, am I glad I didn’t know the flower girl dropping petals represented the couple’s chances to have children! Hmm, wonder what you’d substitute for that if you wanted a few less chances. Those girls can drop LOTS of petals…

And USABride.com has an article about funny wedding superstitions.

Well, I’ll just knock on wood and hope nothing we’ve given advice on before was bad luck!
