Unwrapped!

Unwrapped Weddings on FoodnetworkOh, the sleepless night! You know the one I mean. It’s the kind of night where you’re up late for no good reason, doing your incredible imitation of the channel surfing spud, and wondering if just one more bite of whatever late night snack you favor is really going to bypass your stomach in favor of your hips! (What do you mean you’ve never had one of those?!) During one of those recent nights (ok, so I get them more often than I want to admit), my super-speed, button smashing thumb took a breather when it hit The Food Network – imagine that.

I caught an episode of Unwrapped entitled “Weddings” (Episode CW1C05). Naturally, with the My Wedding Hero wedding planner software on my mind, I stopped to see if there was anything we could chat about here!

If you are a fan of the show, you know they have covered all manner of things from cereal to salad, beach fare to elegant affairs, and they always leave you with some funny, interesting and odd tidbits of trivia. This episode was no exception.

Did you know?

  • In medieval England, wedding guests would bring small cakes that would be piled one on top of the other. The goal was to make it difficult for the bridal couple to kiss over the top of the stack. If they did, it was a symbol of a prosperous life for them.
  • In Roman times, a form of sweet bread was served and used a symbol of good luck.
  • Wedding cake toppers as we have come to know them originated about the time of Queen Victoria – although at that point in history the bridal couple was not shown standing near each other as most figures depicted today.
  • Some people collect wedding toppers! The value varies greatly but a more valuable topper was priced at $400!
  • Jordan Almonds are a popular choice for wedding favors – packaged five at time they are supposed to represent wishes for health, wealth, happiness, longevity and fertility.

And there was more! (Wow, I sounded so “commercially” there!) I was fascinated by the beautiful hand-blown champagne flutes, the method behind making a perfect blend of sparkling wine, the imaginative use of chocolate wedding favors, and the fact that ice sculptures are clearest when their blocks contained the least amount of air bubbles.

It was an unusual look at wedding foods and products. Hopefully, one night when you’re up late playing Monarch of the Spuds, your royal remote will land on a rerun of this Unwrapped episode too! In the meantime, check out of some the places mentioned for some delightful and delicious ideas.
